How to convert cooking measurements
US recipes use volume measurements — cups, tablespoons, and teaspoons. European and scientific recipes use weight (grams) or volume in milliliters. Converting between these systems accurately is especially important in baking, where precision directly affects results.
The US cup is defined as exactly 236.588 milliliters. One tablespoon equals 3 teaspoons or approximately 14.787 ml. One fluid ounce equals approximately 29.574 ml.
Note that metric cups used in Australia, Canada, and other countries equal 250 ml — slightly larger than the US cup of 236.6 ml. Always check which cup measurement a recipe uses.
